So, you want to be an abseiling and canyoning trip leader?

Date(s) - Thursday 01 March, 2018 - Sunday 22 April, 2018
All Day

If you are keen on leading your own abseiling and canyoning trips, with a focus on safety and manageability, please register your interest by 11 March 2018. As UTSOAC had part-sponsored my participation in the Australian School of Mountaineering’s Canyon Leaders Course, I will be making the effort to pass on my knowledge. Seconded by Messrs Brendon Flanagan and Phuong Ho, two ever enthusiastic and reliable trip leaders.

Draft plan:
Session 1: (Selection) Getting to know one another…rigging retrievable abseils on fixed anchors, belaying strategies, retrieve and stow ropes (Vaucluse, Alfords Point or Lindfield).
Session 2: (Learn) Trip preparation. Participate and assist on a multi-pitch abseiling trip (Malaita Point).
Session 3: (Practice) Plan, coordinate/direct an abseiling trip (Malaita Point).
Session 4: (Independent execution) Personally lead an abseiling trip, handle all rigging and coordination (Malaita Point).
Session 5: Rig natural anchors, rig abseil with a top belay, practice improvised rope rescue.
Sessions 6-8: Canyoning at Jugglers and Grand Canyon, Medlow Bath.
Session 9 – 10: Test competence with two unfamiliar multi-pitch abseils or canyons.
