Walk   Walking - 6 hours on undulating bush track Huh?
Bundeena to little Marley beach      Saturday, 15 June 2013        Clara  Kelleher     Limit: 5

The description of this walk on www.wildwalk.com.au as following,

Going from the small town of Bundeena, to one of the largest beaches in the Royal National Park, this walk has great views of the Coast as it heads south through the heath and along the rockshelf. The walk then descends to Marley Beach, which offers the opportunity to swim and explore the lagoon, before heading back to Bundeena. On a sunny day this track is a pure delight.

I will send you more details about this walk closer to the date.
Think twice before joining any activities!!!
You should be responsive at least. I don't want to take any ghost to my walk!

It can be sharing the petrol cost among people.

Cheers!

Saturday's Bouldering trip in Palm Beach      Saturday, 8 June 2013        Chris Gevanni    Limit: 8

Hi folks,

Palm Beach's bouldering trip is back up!
Weather forecast for this Saturday is great, so why not go out and have some fun bouldering?
Winter is coming! This might be your last chance to appreciate Palm Beach if you haven't been there before.
The atmosphere is nice and enjoyable, the sand is great and the water refreshing.
The bouldering problems there aren't too hard, so any level is welcome!

Plan is to get to Palm beach, spend some time bouldering on the 2 big boulders there. Once we're tired, we can ever go for a swim, get sunbathed or play some frisbee!
Dariusz will be seconding me on the trip. I know him well enough to know he'll definitely go for some surfing. If you're keen on bringing your surfboard, feel free to join him in the water!

Hope to see you guys there!

Climb   Climbing - Aus 8-10 Huh?
Practice your knots! The encore to the encore.      Friday, 7 June 2013        Brendon Flanagan    Limit: 99

Hello fellow lovers of the rock! This trip is the encore to the encore that Jeremie ran last week.

Jen Evens and I are on a bit of a mission at the moment to get all interested up and coming trip leaders out there with the knowledge and confidence to run trips of all descriptions. Jen and I are of the belief that an adventure club can never have enough trips.

Primarily the club seems to revolve around rope related activities so this is where the encore to the encore comes into play.

After going through the dynamic (climbing) ropes in storage with the assistance of Greg (the previous Quartermaster), I've decided to retire one 'active' rope and the two mysteriously returned ropes. Why? Safety first people, safety first!

Quite a few members have attended Rope Skills 2 and Trip Leader Information Nights and Jen and I want to encourage the continuance of the knowledge these people have gained. This will help turn them into the valuable trip leaders the club always need.

How can your knowledge be improved upon and retained in your memory? By having some rope at home to practice your knots time and time again. This is how I, and every other climber and abseiler in the world have learnt their knots.

If you've attended Rope Skills 2 or a Trip Leader Information Night and would like your own length of climbing rope to practice on please join my trip and I'll ensure you get about 10 meters of rope (give or take) to play with.

What can you practice tying your knots on at home? Look around the room and you'll find plenty of options. Couch legs, table legs, arm rests, your flat mates ankle, a broom handle, your girlfriend, your boyfriend...the list goes on.

So sign up to this trip and I'll get the rope to you.

As always......

Chalk up, climb on and live the dream!

Abseil   Rope Skills 3 Distinction Rope Skills 3 Distinction Abseiling - 3 - OK technique and confident on some abseils Huh?
Abseil Skills 1      Saturday, 1 June 2013        Brendon Flanagan    Limit: 24

Trip Full - Number of participants signed up 32
Abseil Skills 1 course will teach you the essential skills you need to know to join many of the clubs trips be it abseiling, canoyning or even climbing.

On this course you'll be introduced to the equipment we use in the club for abseiling, how to use this equipment and also gain the important knowledge and confidence to use this equipment on abseils ranging in varying heights and difficulty. You'll also be taught the safety requirements when operating at the top and bottom of a cliff.

This is a one day course and it's going to be conducted at a new and exciting location. The day will start at the sea cliffs of Clovelly where you'll be instructed on how to use the equipment and achieve some easy and comfortable abseils. From here we'll pack up and head to the next set of sensational cliffs at Diamond Bay and Rosa Gully where the real fun begins!

By the end of the day you'll be bounding down cliffs with a smile on your face and have the skills to join many future club activities and trips.

It's that time of the year when the whales start to migrate north so there'll be an excellent chance of spotting them off the coast line. There's also a chance that we'll spot some dolphins as well so bring your camera. Every time I head to these sea cliffs at this time of year mother nature always puts a show on for me so fingers crossed things haven't changed since last years migration season.

When it gets closer to the date I'll contact all memebrs on the course and let them know of a time and meeting place. Preference will be given to those who have cars as this is an extra large course. Please make sure you include your mobile phone number and email address when applying for this course.

The weather man says there are several showers expected for the day but as always I DON'T BELIEVE HIM! Now on the off chance he's right I've got some rainy day options up my sleeve.

Until then chalk up, climb on and live the dream!

Multi Activity   Huh?
Storage code change      Monday, 27 May 2013        Brendon Flanagan    Limit: 1

Trip Full - Number of participants signed up 1
Hello everyone! My name's Brendon and I'm the clubs new Quartermaster and Training Officer. I'm posting this trip as I'm not sure how to send out emails to all club members yet. I'll figure that out one day soon with a little help.

As per club policy the storage combination must be changed regularly. I'll be changing the clubs storage lock code on Monday 27th May. The new code will be given to all committee members and active trip leaders. An active trip leader is a club member who has attended a trip leader info/workshop night (like the one Ellen holds), has assisted and second trips and has led one trip in the past 3 months.

At the next committee meeting I will be proposing that an active trip leader's status be changed to something a little more regular than one trip in 3 months. I'm looking at this so there is more of an incentive for people to (as the club slogan says) "Get OFF Ya Couch" and run more trips for this amazing club. One of the privileges of being an active trip leader is the borrowing of the valuable and highly cherished club gear for your own little adventures and private trips.

There aren't many active trip leaders out there at the moment and myself and the activity officer are looking at changing that. Some activities are seasonal which is totally understandable.

If you've borrowed any gear and still have it and you're not an active trip leader, could you please get it back into storage before the 27th May.

Looking forward to seeing you out there at an activity coming soon to a cliff face near you!

If you need to contact me about any gear you may have please feel free to email me or call me.

Multi Activity   Huh?
Blue Mountains trackcare      Saturday, 18 May 2013        Karena Shell    Limit: 15

Ever wonder how that stone staircase appeared on a beautiful hike in the middle of the Blue Mountains?

Ever thought to yourself, “man, getting to this crag was easy, and the place is so clean”?

Has it ever occurred to you that volunteers and bushcare groups build and maintain our favorite walking tracks and crag accesses?

Well it’s time OAC gives back! Our club has over 1500 participants on our trips head up to the mountains each year, and it's time we earn some club karma points and help keep our second home clean!
Put your best work boots on and join us as we help BMCC (Blue Mountain City Council) track-care group on a well know and beautiful climbing area (Location TBA). Be warned, it’s not a leisurely day in the sun. We’ll be building the track, pulling the weeds and picking up the trash- but, we’ll be spending the day with good people, learning about native plants and the  BM environment, and filling our souls with the goodness of volunteering.

You will need to be able to find/provide your own transportation (even if that's begging me for a lift). It was a bit of a long day last year so if you're keen we'll camp FRIDAY night and be there fresh and ready in the morning.  RSVP is absolutely essential-as we report to the council, so please only serious participants. Tools and gear will be provided.

“Kindness is just love with its work-boots on!”

Il faut battre le fer tant qu'il est encore chaud...
This trip is directed to the climbers who have participated to Darran's "Rock skills 2" the previous week.
The goal is to practice, to improve and to build confidence in setting up and cleaning top rope anchors.
If the time allows it, we will do an introduction to top belaying.
Priority to this trip is given to the participants at Rock skills 2 last Sunday. However, if some of them aren't able to come, the trip is open to persons who have done a similar training previously and want a refresher.
We will go back at Bangor, unless most of yours want to change. Second choice would be Palm Beach. What won't is the departure time, 8:30.
Have a great week!

Q. Am I ready to do this course?

A. Do you have your own climbing equipment and want to learn how to use it? Have you climbed outdoors before and would like to get your own rope and biners? Are you keen to run your own rock climbing trips?

If 'yes', then this is for you.

If 'no' – try climbing at the gym a few more times, build up your confidence and think about buying a harness & shoes. Don't be discouraged - the rocks have been there for millions of years!

NOTE: This is a training weekend, so we won't get a lot of climbing done. Please don't be disappointed! You should leave with the skills and confidence to run your own climbing trips

Bouldering at The Spit      Friday, 3 May 2013        Brendon Flanagan    Limit: 5

Trip Full - Number of participants signed up 7
Listen up all you crazy lovers of the rock!!!! This Friday will find a UTS trip heading off to the fun, the fabulous, the fantastic bouldering crag of Pearl Bay.

This sensational (yes, my favourite word) location is right on the water over looking the Spit Bridge, protected from ALL wind and offers some amazing problems to challange your bouldering skills. This crag offers MANY fun problems at all levels and certainly does cater for the beginners as well as the true boulderer at heart.

Once we've exhausted all that Peral Bay has on offer we'll pack the crash pads and drive to the other side of the Spit Bridge for a tatse of what Sandy Bay crag has to challange us with. Consisting of some overhang problems with big jugs and some arete style problems as well it'll be an amazing way to finish a bouldering trip. Or perhaps a dip at the beach that's directly opposite the crag could be what you have in mind weather permitting.

Speaking of the weather I've checked the report for Friday and apparently we can expect a few light showers. Now I NEVER believe the weather reporters as they tend to be wrong more often than not BUT if somehow they've got it right and it is raining a wet weather alternative will be on offer.

The trip will be opened up to more people if someone with a car joins. People of all bouldering skills are welcome to join.

Chalk up, climb on and live the dream!

Your climbing shoes are more than likely the single most expensive piece of your climbing equipment arsenal. Why is this? Because they perform an important role, allowing you to send those amazing climbs that the UTSOAC trip leaders take you on so often. Your shoes allow you to grip, edge, heel hook (my personal favourite), jam and smear the rock, all while supporting your feet, allowing you to climb in the most optimal way.

A new pair of climbing shoes can range between $110-$230 but when the rubber sole is almost worn through people tend to throw them away and spend big bucks on new ones. By this stage your shoes have stretched enough so that they no longer choke your feet and your toes no longer feel as though they're being bent backwards. It's not time to buy a new pair, it's time to get your old pair resoled by the professionals.

Big Johns Retreads will resole your shoes for roughly $60 a pair. Once you get them back they're almost a brand new pair of rock climbing shoes which are still fitted to your feet. I've had many a resole through Big John and they've always come back as good as new for a smidgen of the price of a new pair.

I've already got a few pairs of shoes from club members to send up with mine this week so why not throw yours in as well and we'll send them all up together!

So how do you know if your shoes need resoling? Why don't you go get them and come back to the computer? I'll wait for you. Go on, go grab your shoes and come back.

Wow, your shoes really stink...can you move them away from the computer please? Thanks.

The toes of your shoes will more often be the first part of the sole to wear away so let's look at the toes of your shoes. If you look close enough you can see the faint line where the rubber of the sole meets the rubber of the shoe. Does the rubber of the sole look as though it's suffering from excessive peeling? Flaking? Tearing? Do your rubber soles look as though they're wearing away quite bad? If you've answered yes to any of these questions your shoes are getting close or are already in need of a resole. If you answered yes to all these questions AND you can see the material of the shoes through the rubber then you've left it too late. Your shoes can't be successfully resoled when they've reached this stage and Big Johns will inform you that it's time to move on and buy a new pair. Been there done that and so has another club member.

Big John Retreads pick up from Mountain Equipment in the city every Thursday so I'll be dropping mine off plus other club members shoes in this Thursday morning. If you'd like to throw your shoes in with the ones already going simply join my activity and I'll give you a call so we can arrange a way for you to get your shoes to me. Big John Retreads return all shoes the following Friday so that means no climbing for a week...or you can use rental shoes (now they really do stink). If you're smart like me you'll own two pairs of shoes for this very reason :-)

By the way, if you've wrapped your climbing shoe toes in electrical tape to stop them from wearing out any further (yes, you both know who you are) then you seriously need to consider a resole.

Chalk up, climb on and live the dream!

Camping & Climbing Long Weekend in the Bluies

We will be heading up to the beautiful bluies for a camp and a climb over the ANZAC long weekend.

I haven't been back to the Bluies since climbing polished limestone in Thailand, so it's time to get reaquainted!

Plan is to leave Wednesday night and come back Sunday afternoon.

Plan to camp at either Dunphy's or Mt York.

We will be visiting several single-pitch crags.

Previous outdoor climbing experience is a pre-requisite, but leading experience is not necessary. You need to be able to climb a 17 indoors.

You will be selected if you:

1) Have been climbing at the Ledge (Ask me, I will recognise you!).
2) If you have a car.
3) Bake

You must have your own shoes, lunch, water and warm clothing. We can provide everything else in terms of gear. Let me know

This is a daytrip to a crag at Point Clare in the Central Coast, just over an hour north of Sydney.  This crag is small but has a good selection of low to moderate grades between 13 and 18.

To come on this trip you need to be able to climb grade 16 in the Ledge and you need to have your own shoes.  All other gear can be provided and top ropes will be set up on the day.

To find out more about the crag climbs, see the following: http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/point-clare

If its a hot day, bring your swimmers as we will probably have a quick dip before returning home to Sydney

Please do not sign up unless you can come along and do not hesitate to contact me on jennifer.c.evans@live.com with any questions

Trip leader info night/workshop      Wednesday, 17 April 2013        Ellen Braybon    Limit: 20

BUILDING 2 LEVEL 5 ROOM 36

Do you think you've got what it takes to lead an outdoor adventure for our club members?

Would you like to know what we require of our trip leaders? What skills, experience and safety training we recommend or provide, what gear the club has, and how to deal with the logistics and website features etc.

The UTS Outdoor Adventure Club is ALWAYS looking for skilled trip leaders and enthusiastic members who are interested in running trips for the club.  Depending on your skills, experience and interest, you might even qualify as a trip leader already!  Even if you don't have heaps of experience, there are many ways to get involved and help out with trip organisation which will allow the club to offer more trips for participants

I will be running another trip leader info night/workshop next Wednesday, April 17 from about 6pm at UTS.  I will confirm the room location later.

Bring along ideas of trips you would like to run and we will go through the procedure for organising an OAC trip.  If you don't have all the necessary skills I will pair you up with someone who is more experienced and you can organise the trip together. Everyone who comes along will be expected to run some kind of trip over the next couple of months - so be prepared with some ideas!

Current trip leaders are welcome to attend and assist.

Annual General Meeting      Thursday, 11 April 2013        Darran Wu    Limit: 300

Our AGM is here again!

LOCATION: CB02.07.005

TIME: 7pm

I will be declaring that all committee positions are vacant for 2013/14.

Our club would not be so awesome without a strong and energetic committee. The committee do the often unappreciated things which help make our trips safe, financial, organised, low-cost, smooth-running, well equipped, and manageable for our trip leaders and participants. We also organise the training that develops our members to be trip leaders.

Each year we re-elect a new committee that puts new energy and ideas into the club. If you think you can make a contribution to improve the club, please come to this meeting.

Here is the list of positions available:

http://www.utsoac.org.au/Contacts.asp

We believe in good Karma. If you dig what we do and are around for most of the year (or will return to Australia), think about what skills you could bring to the committee to help us out.

We need keen, reliable members to help run the club, so if you would like to lend a hand please come to this meeting.

Celebratory Beers will be provided for those that attend to thank the outgoing committee.

Cheers,

Darran

BEULAH ROCK FESTIVUS      Friday, 29 March 2013  till  Monday, 1 April 2013      jennifer nunez    Limit: 20

The 7th annual Beulah Rock Festivus is coming up this Easter long weekend! The Festivus is a non-profit event that is all about bringing climbers together for some good ol' climbing fun, and to help develop the climbing and bouldering potential at Beulah.

WHERE IS BEULAH?

Beulah is the Axelsen Family Station, 2600 acres (currently home to cattle and horses) and covered in clusters of mostly unclimbed granite boulders up to 70m in height. Beulah is about 83km west of Armidale, northern NSW - about 6 hrs from Sydney.

WHAT DO WE DO THERE?

Climb all day...and for the keen ones, into the early morning.
According to the website, there are only 5 full sport climbs that have been bolted, 7 crack climbs that require a typical rack of gear to lead, and 500+ documented boulder problems. A boulderer's heaven!!!!

Awards & free gear are given out for:

  • Mad Flapper Award: the best flapper for the weekend
  • Gone Postal Award: the person to clean and send the most new boulder problems
  • Sender of the Slab Award: the first person to red-point a new line on the Waterfall Dome
  • Big Balls Award: high ball award for the person to consistently get high above the pads
  • Uncarved Block Dyno Comp Winners, mens/ladies
  • Gibbons Slackline Comp, mens/ladies

COST

$5.00 donation when you sign up on the website:
http://www.beulahrockfestivus.com/Beulah_Rock_Festivus/Booking_Form.html

Plus the usual petrol costs split amongst participants.

Generous sponsors help cover costs for: t-shirts, prizes, a pizza night, some beer and drinks, advertising and a host of other contributions.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Attendees need to provide their own food, beer, water, toilet paper, accomodation - just like any other typical weekend of climbing.

There are two unfurnished houses on the site that can accomodate up to 20 people. They are first come, first serve. There are a few toilets scattered around the popular camping sites and there is access to showers and toilets in the two houses for campers.

Friday night from 5pm Uncarved Blocks and Climbing Anchors will be buying everyone dinner - homemade wood fired oven pizza!

TRANSPORT:
Preference will be given to those with a car. Please note: Beulah is located on a cattle station on unsealed roads full of dips. Once I have confirmed numbers, I can start organising transport and can send you out some more detailed information.

Check-in opens at 8am on Friday 29th, so to make the most of the day, I'm thinking that I will be leaving from UTS Jones st at 4am in the morning, aiming to get there by 10am.

FINAL NOTE:

Please only sign up for this trip, if you actually intend to go. You will also need to sign up on their website and pay the $5.00 donation.

There are only 111 spots left of the original 300 spots so sign up quickly on the website:
http://www.beulahrockfestivus.com/Beulah_Rock_Festivus/Booking_Form.html

More information about the Festivus can be found on the link above.
Download the "Important Information" pdf document after signing up and have a read.

To read more about the problems there, visit The Crag:
http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/beulah
Beulah is mostly made up of boulder problems ranging from an intermediate to expert level.

You can email me at jennifernunez@live.com.au, or text me on 0414 074 505 if you have any questions.

Happy bouldering!

Expression of interest. Overnight Beginners/intermediate bush walk in Mt Kosciusko National Park (Snowy Mountains).  The Snowy mountains are located approximately 5 hours from Sydney and is Australia's highest 'mountain range' (technically they are not real mountains as they are not high enough!).  It's a beautiful part of NSW in the alpine region.

THE PLAN: Leave early Saturday morning from UTS and grab lunch on the way.  3-4 hour bush walk on Saturday, camp overnight inside the national park and then probably 4-5 hour bush walk on the Sunday before heading home.  Option to camp a 2nd night and leave Mon morning if we have general consensus.
You'll need to be relatively fit, the tracks will be beginner/intermediate level walking at a moderate pace.

I'm taking maximum of 8 people provided we have another driver.  If no drivers, I can only take 3 others as my car is tiny.
Please sign by by Sun night and only sign up if you're a definite. As it's the Easter long weekend it will likely be pretty busy down there.  There's a chance that all campsites may be booked out in which case we may need to think about another destination.  Letting you know in advance so to not disappoint!

NOTE: It will be compulsory to partake in an Easter egg hunt on the Sunday. :-)

Manly Scenic Walk      Saturday, 23 March 2013        Petro Semeniuk    Limit: 8

Hi there, who's up for some bushwalking on Saturday?

I'm planning to do Manly Scenic Walk. It's around 10km in distance and 4 to 5 hours in time. For map of walk you can check out http://www.manly.nsw.gov.au/DownloadDocument.ashx?DocumentID=5734.

Could be very interesting for people new to Sydney and walk is suitable any level of fitness.

Start: 9am, this Saturday right after Split bridge (point #24 on map in link). If you can't make it 9am please be there at 8.30.
Finish: around 1-2pm near Manly warf(point #6 on map).

After that you could take ferry/bus to CBD,  or go to a Manly beach for a swim.

Cheers
Petro

What better way to start a weekend than with climbing on a Friday and Saturday at two different crags!
If you can think of a better way to start a weekend tell me because I'd like to know!!!

Friday will find us at Mt.Alexandra in the relaxing Southern Highlands.
Only an hour and a half drive from Sydney, door to door, this crag is well worth the visit and not only for the climbing. It's located near an old coke mine where you'll find a touch of Australian history rarely visited by anyone.
Well protected and some good height to go with it, this crag has much on offer.

Follow the link below to see what climbs Mt.A has to offer us, perhaps you can find a route you want to work on.

http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/mt-alexandra

Saturday will find us at Mt.Keira, a crag with some amazing climbs.
The views from Mt.K are stunning, looking out over Wollongong and the Pacific Ocean. From Mt.K it's only an hour and a half drive back to the heart of Sydney. Like Mt.A it's well protected and offers some height on the North Face. Click the link below to check it out.

http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/wollongong/mt-keira

I can hear you asking "What about accommodation"? Well I'm glad you asked. We'll either stay at a cheap motel/pub/hotel in Mittagong or rough it at a camping site. I'll get feedback from the participants and make arrangements closer to the date. A very good mate of mine owns a farm about 15 minutes away from the crag, perhaps we can camp out there and enjoy a camp fire, marsh mellow and a quiet drink.

People with cars will most welcome to join the trip!

Most importantly of all this trip will be Susanna Rodriguez-Barba's triumphant return to climbing after giving birth to her beautiful son Pau. Susanna is now ready to chalk up and send the good stuff and it'll also be Pau's first trip to a crag. Susanna has assured me that Pau will grow up to be a great climber, so come along and witness Pau at the crag so you can say in 20 years time, "I remember his first trip to a crag" as you see him starring in the 2033 Reel Rock Festival.

Chalk up and climb on people!

Waterfall Station - 10am~4pm Sunday 17th March
This is one of the most valuable but least understood skills of the outdoor adventurer. It's easy to underestimate the difficulty of navigating in the Australian bush and this course will help to give you the basic skills needed to keep from getting lost.

You will learn how to use a map and compass to navigate while participating in a friendly competition with others. This training is a vital part of becoming a seconder / leader with the OAC.

Spaces are first being offered to active trip leaders, after priority offers are filled, spaces will be made available to the club in general.
